Who We Are

We at the World Literacy Project believe that literacy is the key to a better world. This year, we will be hosting a local reading program for elementary school students in partnership with Bay Area Hispano Institute for Advancement (BAHIA), working with local and international NGOs to raise literacy awareness, and designing another literacy program that Cal students will implement abroad in Guatemala over Summer 2015.

What We Do

World Literacy Project seeks to raise awareness on international issues relating to poverty, illiteracy, and gender equity. One way we reach out to our community is through our Educational Outreach Programs (EOP). EOP works with children to educate them on international affairs, literacy, and cultural diversity through interactive games, reading and writing exercises, and arts and crafts. Every year, we also design and implement one international literacy program. In the past, we've worked with BuildOn to build a school in Nicaragua, taught computer literacy in Guatemala, and implemented activities at a sustainable kindergarten in Peru.
We are a student group acting independently of the University of California. We take full responsibility for our organization and this web site.

Begun in 2010,

WLP has demonstrated its commitment to service by initiating literacy programs, supporting 9 Cal students to build a school in Nicaragua, hosting a Global Child Issues Forum in partnership with several SF-based nonprofits, designing a computer literacy curriculum in Guatemala, teaching in Peru and more! We regularly educate ourselves on cost-effective poverty solutions during general meetings, and continually seek partnerships with NGOs and other student groups to promote activism on the three topics we care about the most: poverty alleviation, literacy, and gender equity.

Local Programs

BAHIA

World Literacy Project volunteers provide a fun and constructive after-school environment through a literacy program for 4th and 5th graders at BAHIA. Volunteers will work closely with students (teacher student ratio < 1:5) during collaborative lessons and hands-on activities targeting vocabulary, reading, and writing skills.
